Weavingshaw by Heba Al-Wasity
A moody, Gothic fantasy-romance that is a perfect fall read to get into the spooky season!
Weavingshaw is the first installment in a trilogy, and it was also the first Gothic book I read this fall. Let me just say, it did not disappoint! From the very beginning, I was intrigued by not only the magic system but also the characters.
Leena Al-Sayer is an immigrant daughter and refugee after fleeing her kingdom due to war. In her new town, she faces troubles that can be connected to our modern world like discrimination. The message was not lost on me, and it was a very powerful one. Leena also has a unique power, the ability to see the dead. And she uses this ability to save her brother’s life as well as her own despite the risks. She does this by striking a deal with the dangerous, infamous Saint of Silence.
St. Silas is our male main character and he is very mysterious. We get to really know him and his past gradually throughout the book because he guards his secrets closely. He reveals nothing, not even emotion. This can be because his profession is dealing with secrets. And the Saint of Silence needs Leena’s ability to meet his own goals, whatever that may be.
Not only does this book have incredible atmospheric writing, but it also has the perfect slow burn romance. And when I say slow burn, I mean frustratingly slow in the best way possible. St. Silas was such a yearner!
A story with demons, ghosts, and secrets that need to be uncovered, Weavingshaw was a five star read for me. I cannot wait for the sequel to be released this spring!
